The Alaska Railroad has an exclusive use easement for the railroad tracks in downtown Palmer. Operationally the tracks are currently considered inadequate to accommodate trains. To reestablish meaningful service to downtown Palmer there will need to be a complete rehab of the existing tracks. Estimates vary and will be dependent on what the Alaska Railroad requires but range from $1 million to $5 million. Additionally, if tracks are to be restored restricted access will more than likely be a requirement for operation within the downtown corridor.
