Benefits Program

Welcome to the City of Palmer's benefits information page. To provide the best quality of life for its employees, the City provides a number of opportunities for all regular full-time employees to participate in group medical, vision, dental, life insurance and accidental death & disability programs. Retirement options are provided by the State of Alaska Division of Retirement Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).

Health, Dental & Vision Insurance:

The City offers employees medical, dental and vision insurance through Premera BlueCross BlueShield.  There is no Primary Care Physician (PCP) required.  The City pays the employee only premium for coverage.  Dependent coverage premiums are at a reduced rate.  In addition to the vision insurance provided thru Premera, the city also provides all benefit enrolled employees and thier enrolled dependents additional vision insurance thru VSP.

Health Reimbursment Arrangement:

To assist employees with health costs, benefit enrolled employees are provided with a Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) in the amount of $2,000.00 per calendar year; the HRA is prorated for employees who enroll in health insurance plans after January 1.

Life Insurance:

The City provides life insurance policy of $50, 000.00 from MetLife for all full time employees; employee paid supplemental voluntary employee and dependent coverage is also available.  All MetLife policies are portable upon separation of city service.

Short Term Disability:

The City provides a short term disability (STD) policy for all full-time employees from MetLife.

Employee Assistance Plan:

MetLife provides guidance and confidential counseling for all City employees (regardless of the number of hours they work) and dependents.  Counseling services cover a variety of topics including work, family, money, legal issues, identity theft recovery, and health.  

Supplemental Insurance:

Voluntary Supplemental Insurance products (Accident, Cancer, Critical Illness, Hospital Indemnity Vision) are available.

Voluntary Deferred Compensation:

Section 457, supplemental retirement program.

Independence Day (July 4th)
Labor Day (First Monday in September)
Veterans Day (November 11th)
Thanksgiving Day (Fourth Thursday in November)
Day after Thanksgiving Day (Fourth Friday in November)
Christmas Day (December 25th)

Full-time employees also receive 2 floating holidays each year
