Library Courtyard Concept

Brief Project Summary:
The Palmer City Council approved an appropriation of $70,000 to replace the existing sidewalk at the Palmer Public Library. This creates an opportunity to provide an outdoor space to increase the functionality and improve the delivery of library services. The library mission has changed since the initial construction of the PPL in 1985. This courtyard concept update will give the city the ability to increase the functionality without a complete renovation of the current facility.

The Palmer Public Library needs additional space for the community to gather for the purpose of meeting, study, and library programming. Demand by community members has increased for private study rooms or smaller meeting areas in the library. Power issues arise frequently as patrons try to find seating near one of the library’s few available power outlets to charge mobile devices and laptops. Because the building is not large enough to accommodate requests for additional meeting and study areas, the library will address these needs by renovating and expanding its outdoor space.

Palmer Public Library will work with the Sustainable Design Group (SDG) on a design for an outdoor area that will better serve the community as a gathering place. This renovation will create a multipurpose space that can be used effectively as a place to meet, study, recreate, and engage in library programming. An advantage of creating usable space outside of the library is the before- and after-hours access it will provide, particularly with the extended daylight Palmer experiences during the summer. Key features of the project include an amphitheater, an open area with removable benches and tables, a donor recognition wall, and dedicated activity areas. The dedicated activity areas will provide space for children to play and participate in library programming, and space for the community to come together for the city’s annual holiday tree lighting in what will be called “Contemplation Circle.” A new flagpole, bike rack, and Palmer Public Library sign will be installed. Additional lights will be installed to supplement the existing lights. Select benches and tables will include charging capabilities for mobile devices and laptops. An electronic information kiosk will be installed under a covered walkway situated by the curb. The main entrance will have a second covered walkway where benches equipped with mobile device charging capabilities will sit. Landscaping will be done with native vegetation.
