Though the library may have looked quiet on the program front this past month, staff have been busily preparing for the upcoming Summer Reading Program. Throughout the month of May, Palmer Library hosts as many classrooms as possible to share library information. It’s amazing how many kids grow up in Palmer and have never visited the library! In just 3 weeks, nearly 1,000 kids were treated to stories, a library tour, and given invitations to join us this summer. Not everyone is aware that Summer Reading Program is a community initiative to offset the learning that is lost during summer break. Being involved in any capacity with the library during the summer months has proven to help students retain their learning. There are three ways one can support and enjoy the benefits of summer reading—Read with us, of course, Geocache with us, or attend a program. All options are coordinated to enrich and entertain; a real win-win when considering all participation is FREE!!! Thank you to the Friends of the Palmer Library for their generous support of this program. To show your support of education and learning, please stop by Palmer Library and leave your name at the Summer Reading Program tables. There are no obligations when you do so; it’s just a simple way to express support. Thank you!

The CHILL Classic Cinema film for May was 1958's ”A Night To Remember". It was based on Walter Lord's 1955 book of the same title. This was the last film, about the Titanic disaster, to be filmed in black and white. A handful of Titanic survivors were present for filming, and shared details they remembered from the event to help shape the film. James Cameron's 1997 hit movie, Titanic, was highly influenced by this version, in particular. Mr. Cameron said he used many of the same camera angles, and similar character arcs.

Mat Su Library Board: May meeting cancelled, lack of quorum.

MSLN Library Directors Meeting: Discussion on how to separate Wasilla items in the totes from other MSLN libraries, after the Plastic bag ban. Libraries can use the plastic bags to sort library items going to Wasilla. Wasilla is purchasing heavier plastic bags to use from Wasilla and will recycle bags received. How to handle inebriated (drugs and alcohol) patrons that are not causing disruption but causing parents of younger patron’s concerns.

Alaska Library Catalog(ALC): In May, Fairbanks North Star Borough Public Libraries, UAF Rasmuson Libraries were added to the joint catalog. 92% of Libraries in Alaska are now members and share in the consortium, consisting of 80 public, academic, museum, and special libraries. Users will now have access to over 6 million different items. Library mail added a couple of weekly boxes with the addition of Fairbanks, UAF, and several smaller libraries to the ALC in May. Our patrons will have access to the new ALC library collections sometime in June.
