Patron Code of Conduct

To better serve all public library users, the library has established standards of acceptable behavior.  It is expected that members of the public will conduct themselves at all times in a manner that does not interfere with others and that is in keeping with the nature of the library’s services and programs.
The library provides clean, pleasant reading areas to study, select and examine library materials, use computers, and to participate in library programs and other public meetings.  Any activity not connected with these purposes is inappropriate, especially if it impinges on the rights of others, creates a disturbance, could result in injury to oneself or others, and/or result in damage to library materials, equipment, building or grounds.
Patrons that do not abide by these standards will be asked to leave, may be subject to removal from the library premises by the police, and may be subject to a restriction of library privileges.

Examples of inappropriate behavior include but are not limited to:

  • Leaving young children unattended;
  • Abuse/vandalism of library premises and/or equipment;
  • Harassment or abuse of other library users or library staff;
  • Refusal to leave at closing;
  • Use of radios, phones, cd players, etc., without headphones;
  • Swinging on railings, jumping off walls, etc;
  • Smoking or other tobacco use (to include E-cigarettes);
  • Solicit for personal, political or religious purposes;
  • Unruly, disruptive or offensive behavior (including snoring, yelling, etc.);
  • Apparent intoxication or any condition resulting in disorientation, disruption, or possible damage or harm to oneself or others;
  • Bringing animals in the building (with the exception of service animals);
  • Consumption of food or beverages, except where specifically allowed;
  • Violation of posted internet and computer use polices;
  • Theft of library property or the personal property of library staff or patrons.

Unacceptable behavior will result in a warning to modify behavior or leave the building.  The police will be summoned if staff requests to leave the library are refused or ignored.
